On the subject of furloughs. Its seems that Mayor Barrett thinks that by shutting city services and departments and furloughing employees unpaid for two days a year that the city can save some money. The initial story from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that broke the news to employees of course came before any message from the city. Just like privatization, the city is letting the newspaper be the bearer of bad news. According to the article from the Journal Sentinel certain essential departments including police, fire and water works would be unaffected. Later some, but not all water works employees were informed that the paper was wrong, they would be subject to furlough when on non operation shifts.
